Who Qualifies

Who is eligible for a life settlement?

Age & Life Expectancy

65+ is a great start. A majority of the market transactions occur on senior insureds. More important than age however, is a life expectancy of less than 20 years.

Health

A change in health since the policy was issued is usually the most impactful factor to the value of a policy. Typically, the shorter someone’s life expectancy, the greater the policy’s value. However, in today’s expanded marketplace, even healthy insureds over 75 are being sought by certain buyers.

Face Amount

From $100,000 and up. The diverse appetites of buyers have created competitive buying niches. Aggressive capital can now be found in abundance for small and large face policies. The average policy size purchased is over $1.3M.

Policy Type

Universal Life, IUL, GUL, convertible term, and whole life policies, including survivorships, can be sold by policy owners. Current assumption and GUL products currently account for the bulk of policies sold. Term policies that are still convertible offer win-win scenarios for agents and policy owners alike.

Why people choose to sell their life insurance

Catalyst

Rising Premiums or Affordability Concerns

What once felt manageable may now strain retirement income, fixed budgets or long-term financial plans.

  • Client forced to consider lapse/surrender
  • Coverage has become a financial burden
  • Premiums tolerance has diminished

Rising Premiums

When premiums rise unexpectedly, policy owners often feel they have only two options: continue funding the policy or surrender it.

There may be a third.

If maintaining coverage no longer aligns with your financial priorities, a life settlement review can determine whether your policy has market value beyond its surrender amount.

Catalyst

The Original Purpose No Longer Applies

Life insurance is typically purchased to solve a specific need — but needs evolve.

  • Estate Tax exposure reduced
  • Business sold or key person exits
  • Family dynamics or financial dependencies changed

Circumstances

Over time, circumstances change.

Businesses are sold. Estate exposure shifts. Children become financially independent. Divorce restructures planning.

If the reason for owning the policy no longer exists, it may be time to reassess whether maintaining it still makes strategic sense.

An independent evaluation helps determine whether retaining, surrendering, or selling the policy best serves current goals.

Catalyst

Changes in Health

For many clients, the greatest financial threat isn’t death — it’s the cost of living longer.

  • Rising medical expenses
  • Desire to age in place
  • Prioritizing long term care needs

Health

For many clients, a health change is the moment that reframes how they think about their life insurance policy.

Rising medical expenses and long-term care planning costs create an urgent need for liquidity that a dormant policy may be uniquely positioned to provide.

For those who simply want to age in place on their own terms, a life settlement can transform an underutilized asset into the financial freedom to do exactly that.

Catalyst

Retirement Liquidity Needs

As clients enter retirement, financial priorities shift.  So should their planning.

  • Increase monthly cash flow
  • Enhancing planning strategies
  • Retire existing debt
  • See their Legacy in action

Retirement

For many retirees, a life insurance policy represents an untapped source of liquidity at exactly the moment it’s needed most.

Proceeds can eliminate debt, improve monthly cash flow, or be directed intentionally — funding a grandchild’s tuition or helping a child with a down payment rather than leaving heirs to wait for a future benefit.

Before surrendering a policy or continuing to fund one that no longer serves its purpose, a review clarifies their options.
